Would you like to hear directly from Rochelle Stephens, publisher from Wombat Books, what she's looking for in middle fiction in 2025? Rochelle recently completed her Masters of Editing and Publishing with a thesis exploring middle fiction and will briefly talk about some issues in this age group and how to approach the gaps in the market.

Similar to the in person events that Rochelle ran for picture books these are short online information session.
At this event, Rochelle will explain:
· The submission process for middle fiction at Wombat Books including length, genres of interests and tips
· What she will be looking for in 2025
· Give examples of 5-7 Wombat Books titles, the publishing process and why she chose them for publication.
Each session will go for an hour/allowing for a little over time for questions and will not be recorded. Limited questions will be answered at the end from the chat function. There will be time for some elevator line practice pitches so bring your elevator line pitch and Rochelle will say yes or no whether she would read more. (This is not an actual pitch, just meant as practice and testing to see what you might like to submit during open submissions in July). There are no costs for submission and you are not required to attend an event to submit, this is just an opportunity to learn more.

Cost is $40 and includes one of the seven books listed below posted free of charge. Nominate your choice of book in the comments section. A zoom link wil be sent to you the day before the information session. It will all be online.

    Middle grade insights

Posted by Jess on 22nd May 2025

I enjoyed that Rochelle shared what she enjoys reading and publishing in this genre but also supported her ideas with research from her study in this particular area of children’s literature. Beyond the insight into what Wombat might publish, the session also provided some introductory notes about age groups, word counts and styles that I found most helpful, as someone wanting to dabble for the first time, in this space.

    Informative session on MG Submissions

Posted by Haylee on 21st May 2025

This was such an informative and helpful session on submitting Middle Grade stories to Wombat and beyond. I learnt a lot about how to categorise genres and what Wombat are looking for. Rochelle was very generous in answering questions and providing feedback on ideas for elevator pitches.
