Job Description: Wombat Books/Stairway to Stories/Rhiza Edge

Wombat Books is an independent family run publishing house founded in 2009. Wombat Books has published over 100 books in the past 12 years and has more books on the horizon. We publish books for children aged 5-18 and some select adult and non-fiction titles.

The Wombat Books office is located in Chinchilla, Queensland. We are looking to expand and are looking for an appropriate qualified person to work part-time in our office.

Wombat Books currently has an opportunity for someone who wants to work in editorial/marketing role in publishing. The job is in country QLD so a great chance for someone starting out in publishing to experience the country life or for a local Western Downs candidate.

Duties will include a range of publishing and bookselling skills that are most appropriate for the right applicant. These duties could include:

  • Bookselling activities in our bookshop front – ordering, retail, bookkeeping, merchandising, stock inventory and promotion
  • Publishing activities such as editing, proofing, layout and design, marketing, design work such as the use of Adobe Creative Suite
  • Selection of children’s books for our list and project management
  • Data management
  • Working in a team

This role is ideal for someone who is still learning about the publishing industry and wants to try their hand at a lot of relevant tasks and will be given a lot of opportunity for learning.

Essential skills

  • Word processing
  • Teamwork as well as independent work
  • Willingness to learn
  • Attention to detail
  • Love of books
  • Grammar, proofreading skills
  • Customer Service

Desirable Skills (any mix of these will be looked upon favourably)

  • Marketing (social media and newsletters)
  • Graphic Design skills (eg use of Adobe Creative Suite particularly indesign, photoshop, premier rush and audition)
  • Knowledge of book industry
  • Accounting/Bookkeeping
  • Creative writing or artistic skills

Preferred experience

  • An understanding or strong interest and passion in the publishing industry
  • University courses in writing/editing or publishing
  • Previous experience in customer service would be ideal

Hours: Starting with 14-18 hours a week spread over 3 days depending on the person’s skills. Hours will be decided with the right candidate. Design or Clerical award rate pay or higher depending on the person’s skills.

School-Based Trainee - Completing a Cert III in Screen and Media

We have an opportunity for a local student to complete a Cert III in Screen and Media. The shift hours would be one afternoon and one Saturday a week (most weeks) with very little hours away from school. This is ideal for a Year 10, 11 or 12 student. You would be working with Adobe Creative Suite: Audition and Premier Pro, customer service, design and illustrative work and general office/retail skills.

The traineeship can be completed in a year.
