Product Overview

No phone, no wi-fi, no friends and no options.

Expelled from three schools, Joey is sent to the country to live with his aunt. She asks him to help an old man recovering from an accident, and now he has a choice. It sounds like a crazy idea, but he chooses to help. What else is there to do, a million miles from anywhere?

But when Joey meets Harry, he finds in him a friend—even if he’s eighty-five. Maybe life when people trust you might be a good thing.

As Joey's desire for acceptance grows, break-ins threaten the community and Joey's past starts to catch up with him. How can Joey turn his life around when his mistakes follow him everywhere he goes? And will he be there for Harry when he needs him?

Praise for Last Chance Joey:

"... it's hard not to get caught up in this feel-good journey. ... [the] characters are warm and genuine, and the resolution is moving." - Anica Boulanger-Mashberg, Books+Publishing

    Fascinating Read

Posted by Frances Prentice on 4th Sep 2025

I received an advance reading copy of Last Chance Joey from the publisher. The book gripped me from the opening pages and I devoured it in one afternoon. Joey is the type of student who is the bane of teacher's lives - but the reasons behind his 'belligerent' behaviour is quickly made apparent. He has dyslexia (and likely Irlen Syndrome, although this is not diagnosed), and is covering up for the fact the letters never stay still, making it impossible for him to read. As a 'last chance' Joey is sent to stay with his aunt in a rural area. He befriends a shy hermit, called 'Young Harry' and discovers that his past doesn't have to define him. His new friends, the horse rider, Emily, and would be footballer, Arjun, also help him carve out a new life. And when the past raises its head, his new friends stand with him and help him through a difficult time. Thoroughly recommended for all teens and adults, especially those who like real stories with heart and soul.
