On the first day of the school holidays. Shayna and Zac crept in at 7am before Mum was even out of bed. 'Mum can we do electronics?' Zac asked. ‘No!’ ‘Mum how about now?’ Zac asked again 5 minutes later. ‘No!’ ‘If you keep asking, Mum will probably get mad,’ Shayna said. ‘Mum! Is it ok now?’ Zac asked again anyway.
|
Shayna is about 8-9 girl. Zac is about 7. Mum is in pjs. |
6-7 |
‘It’s the school holidays kids. How about you find something to do that doesn’t involve a screen!’ Mum said, bleary eyed as she got out of bed. ‘But there is nothing to do then!’ said Zac. ‘People used to do all kinds of things to have fun. Let's try a challenge.’ Shayna and Zac looked very concerned. ‘No screen time for 21 days.’ ‘What! But what do we do?’ ‘You will work it out!’ |
Mum is out of bed in this scene. |

Day 1:
Mum brought out the board games. Some were ones Shayna and Zac have never played before. ‘Get your brother to help you learn the rules. He can have the 21 day ban as well.’ Josh complained from his room as he turned off his gaming computer. ‘Otherwise you can all help me with the cleaning! That would be good for you too!’ ‘No … we can try it Mum.’ Shayna put on her sweet face. They played game after game and even laugh a couple of times. ‘Maybe if we do really good at this Mum will let us back on the electronics tomorrow,’ Shayna whispered.
|
Mum brings out the board games. Josh is about 14.
Please ensure there are no images of actual brand name board games or any titles or logos. Play money and pieces on boards is fine. Make sure it doesn’t look like a specific game. |

Day 2:
'Board games weren't that bad,' said Shayna, 'but there's nothing to do today. I need to watch TV!' 'And I need to play my video games!' complained Zac. 'But you did so well yesterday.' Mum grabbed her jacket. 'Let's go to the park for a bit.'
|
They are all at the park including Mum.
|

Day 3: When Josh got up he grabbed a book. ‘I am going to read today.’ ‘Read? But Zac will need help and I don’t want to,’ Shayna complained. ‘You can work it out.’ Mum smiled. |
Kids are all reading. Shayna is helping Zac. If you want to use titles of books they need to either be in public domain (older classics) or you can use titles of other Wombat Books books or illustration challenges. |
12 |
Day 4: Josh, Zac and Shayna woke up early. ‘What do we do?’ Zac asked. Mum brought out some baked beans cans. ‘Why do you have these?’ ‘What do we do with these, Mum?’ ‘Craft today.' ‘Seriously Mum?’ They made walkie-talkies and then got onto stamps and made enough cards to last the year.
|
Craft activities can be expanded but include the tin cables and some stamp pads and cards. Again, no logos. |

Day 5: Mum set up the turntable. ‘Listen to some music, dance, find new music,’ Mum said. ‘But we need Josh’s phone to connect the music.’ ‘Not with this. Listen to some of my records.’ ‘That’s a bit retro Mum!’ Shayna laughed at her. Still they danced and laughed until they could do no more. |
|

Day 6: Mum had to go to work, so Zac suggested tennis in the backyard. Josh supervised but when they started playing soccer he joined in the fun. After lunch they made cookies. Josh ate most of them!
|
Mum is not in the scene or is in the background working on her computer. Images could be small vignettes* See extra notes below for how to draw vignettes. |

Day 7: 'What do you have there?' Zac asked as Josh appeared with binoculars. 'When I was younger Grandad took me bird watching and it was lots of fun. I thought we could try it together.' 'Maybe we could take some photos and become citizen scientists?' Shayna proposed. The three raced outside and Josh told them all about rainbow lorikeets and kookaburras. |
|

Day 8: Josh came out in his swimmers that morning. 'Pool time!' Shayna and Zac squealed and rushed off to get changed. Mum came to watch but mostly just chatted with the other mums at the pool.
|

Day 9: Shayna and Zac’s friends came over at 10. They brought their tablets to all play together, but Mum still said no. ‘You can find other things to do.’ She smiled. And all three kids just rolled their eyes and went outside. They played on the trampoline. Then they went out on the scooters.

Day 10: 'Art can be really fun,' said Josh, 'I do it at school.' 'What kinds of things can you do?' Shayna asked. 'You can use paints or clay or just draw.' He got out some paper. 'And it can be anything.' So they all drew and let their imagination take over.

Day 11: Josh had to go to work. Zac and Shayna were left to come up with things to play on their own. It didn't take long, though, to come up with a brand new game. ‘We're in a jungle. I'm an adventurer,’ yelled Zac. ‘And I'm an explorer. I go to places no one's ever been and record what I see,’ Shayna added.
|
Zac and Shayna have turned their backyard into a jungle. |

Day 12: <For the next few pages the text is purposefully not written. The idea is for you to come up with other things the kids could do and we will choose the best ideas and write the text around it! Text not yet written.> |
Use your imagination. What else would you do on a day without electronics?
Maybe things like hide and seek, capture the flag, card games, imaginative roleplay, that kind of thing? Play with cousins. Write stories.

Day 20:
Mum asked, ‘What do you want to do today?’
‘I need to finish the book I started the other day.’ Shayna smiled as she plopped on the couch.
‘I have some more drawing to do,’ Zac said. ‘Can I use paints as well today?’
‘I will help you Zac, I am going to paint too,’ Josh said.

‘Let’s go celebrate a great few weeks at the beach!’

The tablets remain on the charging station back at home. Make sure there are no logos or icons on the tablets. |
Important things:
Do not write any text from the story on your page. Do not even write “text here” just leave a space.
The easiest option is for each spread to create vignettes. When you draw an entire page it is sometimes hard for us to place the words.
E.g. have a picture of two of the kids doing one thing and then Josh and Mum doing something else but with faded edges so it is easier for us to place on the page. Also make it so the edges fade into white so we can use them.
If you would like to propose text for the not yet written pages provide it on a separate page and we might use some of it!
