    Go Wildkin!

I'm not a kid, but read this because I have kids (make sense?), and will now enjoy chatting to them about it. The characters are anthropomorphised Australian animals, crafted beautifully, and I fell in love with so many of them. Scree, Patch, and Boppit are my favourites, and Boppit is hilarious (I laughed out loud at many of his lines). It's a truly heart-warming tale, and my kids will love it. Read it individually, or read it TO your younger kids, then chat about it with them, like I'm going to.

    A terrific book!

What a beautiful book! A terrific fantasy story featuring Aussie animals and heaps of twists and turns. As a secondary-school English teacher, I know that middle-school readers, in particular, will love this book, and it has an important theme about looking after nature and the environment, too.

    Captain Scree stole my heart

Posted by Janea on 7th Apr 2026

I can't recommend Dugongs of the Sky highly enough. It reminded me of reading Deltora Quest, which was always a favourite of mine. Our protagonist, Captain Scree – a name pleasing to say both out loud and in your head – was a complex character, more complicated than you usually see in middle grade fiction, and the issues were close to my heart and compelling. It was warm, heartfelt, and the story was easy to read even though I picked it up during a time when I'm not getting through many books despite being an avid reader. Highly recommend!!!
