Picture Book Submissions: Cover Letters

Posted by Rochelle Stephens, Publisher at Wombat and Rhiza on 28th Oct 2024

Dear authors,

There are a lot of considerations when writing a cover letter. If you need one for your submission, to Wombat or to anyone, here are my tips:

Include: Your details (in case we want to contact you!), the title of the manuscript, the target age group.

A short summary. This can be key for us as if the summary doesn't interest us we may not spend much time on the manuscript.

A short bio can be useful. But I do mean short and to the point. Include successes in the industry.

Make sure you address to the correct company. I am not bothered by the name on the submission letter - it can be to me as the publisher for Wombat Books or just say Dear Editor, that's fine, but I don't like it if you copy the same cover letter and put a different publishing house on the letter!

Remember your pitch should be succinct and mention the most important reasons your book should get picked up.

A note on target age groups, be realistic. Picture books are normally targeted at a range of no more than 3 years (as in 4-7 years, 2-5 years etc).

A note on age groups. We mostly focus on picture books suitable for early primary school and don't do board or felt or pop up books. Do not send us complicated printing ideas, we like standard picture books!

Keep an eye on our blogs and facebook posts and read our books in the mean time. Slush pile manuscripts do get into publication with us so don't be afraid to try!

PS When we open submissions we will let you know how to send your submission. Do not send anything via email or any other format before our opening date! And do not ask any questions on our contact form as we are not able to respond to all of these. But follow this blog!
