Product Overview

Saturday 28 February 2.30 - 4.30pm Queensland Time.

Wombat Books receives submissions from over 400 authors each time we open for picture books. But much less for early reader and junior fiction where there is less competition.

In this two hour session, publisher, Rochelle Stephens, will workshop how to convert a picture book idea into a junior or early fiction book where there is more opportunity and less competition in a completely saturated picture book market.

This session will be include the following aspects:

  • How to know the audience of the manuscript you are writing. This will cover considerations like how commercial your book is, is it educational as well or instead etc, as we well as the age group and best format for a manuscript you are working on.
  • A comparison between picture books and early readers
  • How the pitch is different
  • The importance of point of view in the reading experience of picture books through to junior fiction.
  • How to develop your characters and story if changing a picture book text to a early/junior fiction.
  • Some tips on how to make that decision. If you have the wrong format how to swap it.
  • Some discussion from Rochelle, in her publishing role, as to why you might like to expand into early reader/junior fiction books.

This workshop will allow for quite a few questions and discussion and is designed for you to work on a project as we go. This is not relevant to submissions and purely a workshop. There will be an opportunity to go through a coaching process via Book Whispers after this event if interested, but no obligation. There is no obligation to submit to Wombat either.

Extra to this session will be information about the Wombat publishing process though this is unrelated to submission.

· The submission process for early readers and junior fiction at Wombat Books
· What we will be looking for in 2026.
The session will go for an 2 hours and will not be recorded. Limited questions will be answered at the end from the chat function. There are a couple of activities during the workshop that you can ask questions while you do. We won't finish the session without allowing for plenty of questions.

Cost is $75.00 and bookings will close 2 days prior to the event. A zoom link will be sent the day before.

    Picture Book Conversion Workshop Review

Posted by Lellie Lopter on 23rd Jan 2026

I recently attended Rochelle Stephen’s workshop at Wombat Books on converting picture books into early readers, and it was exactly the guidance I didn’t know I needed. Compared to a previous picture book session I’d attended, this workshop went several layers further into both picture books and early readers (and even a bit on junior fiction too).. Rochelle was generous with her knowledge, giving precise instruction and breaking down the structural, language, and pacing shifts required when moving from picture books to early readers. It wasn’t just about theory. It was about how publishing actually works and what editors like Rochelle are really looking for. Although the session was focused on what Wombat’s list needs, I got so much out of this session that is easily transferable to other publishers submissions too. What I appreciated most about this session was the practical guidance on presenting a manuscript in a way that gives it the best possible chance of being published and, most importantly, of reaching little readers. Clear, honest, and grounded in real industry experience, the session left me feeling informed and empowered rather than overwhelmed, so if you’re serious about writing for children and curious about early readers, this workshop was thoughtful, empowering, and genuinely useful and I would highly recommend it.

    Picture Books vs Junior Fiction

Posted by David Caddy on 23rd Jan 2026

Thoroughly enjoyed the presentation. It motivated me to work assiduously on a picture book for 3 days, then abandon it when I saw a junior fiction book with the same theme. Ha! the joy of writing.

    The Picture Book Conversion Workshop

Posted by Carolyn Daly on 20th Jan 2026

The workshop was a great opportunity to identify the differences between picture books, early readers and junior fiction. I have just been through the process of converting a picture book into an illustrated junior fiction and this workshop assisted me in fine-tuning and also identifying that I'm on the right track with the conversion. Also a great opportunity to understand more about Wombat Books and the publishing industry as a whole. Thanks for the workshop.

    PB conversion workshop - amazing!

Posted by Paul Rodriguez on 17th Jan 2026

Once again, Rochelle offered her experience, passion, and clarity of communication to writers at all levels of their journey. Excellent description of characteristics that define various book categories (PB, early reader, junior fiction, MG, teen). Detailed information and exercises to guide potential ‘writing-up’: converting a detailed ms that you might have considered a PB to an early reader/JF perhaps. The workshop helped me shape and re-focus my works in progress. Great opportunity to share ideas, questions, and perspectives with Rochelle and other attendees. Thank you, Rochelle. Definitely recommend running it again.
