Celebrate Harmony Week with Books

Harmony Week 2025 will be celebrated from Monday 17th to Sunday 25th March.

What is Harmony Week?

Since 1999, Harmony Week has been a wonderful celebration of Australian multiculturalism.

Did you know…

Nearly half of Australians were born overseas or have at least one parent who was. Since 1945, more than 7.5 million people have migrated to Australia. Apart from English, the most common languages in Australia are Mandarin, Arabic, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Italian, Greek, Tagalog/Filipino, Hindi, Spanish, and Punjabi.

Harmony Week is about diversity, inclusion, and respect. It is an opportunity to come together and create a sense of belonging.

Host a Multicultural Story Time

A lovely and simple way to celebrate Harmony Week is to host a multicultural story time at your school, playgroup or library.

Read books that embrace cultural differences. In Dragon Guest Handbook, the dragon doesn’t know how to speak or read English. But the boy quickly adapts and shows readers that we don’t have to speak the same language to show kindness.

This book explores cultural diversity, language barriers, and non-verbal communication. It opens discussions with young children about what we can all do to make others feel welcome.

Orange is the official colour of Harmony Week! Be like our dragon and wear something orange. It represents social communication, stimulating two-way conversations.

You may like to invite people to bring a plate of food to share or something special from their culture.

Most of all, be welcoming, kind and inclusive.

Other books that celebrate cultural diversity include Amira’s Magpie and Giovanni.
