Short story competitions are the best. Why?

15th Oct 2026

If you're a regular visiting our website and checking out our books, you may have noticed that we regularly promote upcoming short story anthologies asking for submissions. Our most recent one is called Hidden Creatures, and we have had about 150 submissions to it, which is so great, as it gives us so many great stories to choose from.

We love short stories because they're a different writing style, and they give authors an opportunity to try something new. We also get to encounter new authors and see their ideas and writing style.

Students study short stories in high school as well, and our books can be excellent to use in the classroom. Our teacher notes are extensive if you're a teacher and looking for some different short story anthologies.

If a new and emerging author has their story featured in an anthology, it gives them something to add to a writing resume. It's also fun for established authors and provides a new way for readers to find you!

At the end of this month, we'll be announcing two new short story collection competitions. One will be for Wombat (middle-grade readers) and one will be for Rhiza again.

We have considered including poetry in our anthologies. At this stage we’ll keep them prose, but we're keen to consider other options in the future.

If you're in the Brisbane area, we have upcoming launches of two of our short story anthologies. They will be held at The Mad Hatters Bookshop, Manly, QLD. Come and hear from Rochelle Stephens, publisher at Rhiza Press and the editor of some of our anthologies. Rochelle will announce the new anthologies at the launch of Under a Different Sky or Dragons, Doorways and Destiny. Book in and celebrate with the authors and editors and ask the team directly anything you’d like to know about short story writing/editing.
