Wombat In Western Downs Writing Competition

Wombat Books in the Western Downs Writing Competition

Wombat Books has opened a small bookshop in the country town of Chinchilla, Queensland. To share our love of publishing, story, literature and writing we are running a competition for local aspiring authors and illustrators. This competition is open to children and adults, however the resulting book will have a guaranteed mix of children and adult stories.

We love that we are now set up in our country area and want to explore country Queensland by collecting stories and launching the book collection at the next Chinchilla watermelon festival.

How to Enter

To enter the challenge you have the following options:

Write a story, a poem or draw a picture and send it to stairwaytostories@wombatrhiza.com.au

The entry fee is $5 per under 18 or $10 per adult.

This can be paid via our shop: https://stairwaytostories.com.au/p/17239675

All entries need to be original.

What do I write or draw about?

Anything that has an authentic Queensland feel. Anything that can be read to younger children or also enjoyed by adults. We want to aim the book at middle to high school readers to give them an experience about country life in Qld. Otherwise you have freedom!

Entries close on the 30th of November.

Entry Guidelines

This short story can be fiction, or be a reflective piece or recount about a time in the Western Downs area.

The challenge is split up into two categories: Under 18s and Adults.

The Prizes

Wombat Books is offering a prize for the winning top story of a $100 voucher at Stairway to Stories bookshop. Two runner up prizes will also earn a $50 book voucher. One of these prizes will be for under 18s and the other will be for adults. The overall top story can be from any age group.

Plus all stories will be considered for our local short story collection book to be published by Wombat Books.

Wombat Books prides itself in delivering great books that teach our readers something important, especially when it comes to understanding one another and being empowered by our differences, and the experience of local Queensland. Although, it won't be us with the pen, but little readers and writers themselves.

Here are some more great recommendations for beautiful books that teach readers how to show care and engage with those who might be a bit different to them.
